WORKSHOP

Regulation related to microbiomes in food systems

DATE & TIME: November 27, 2025 12:15 - 13:30

The session will provide an update on scientific criteria used to evaluate microbes used in regulated food products and the progress needed in regulatory science to improve guidance for assessing and authorising microbiome applications.

Chairs: Yolanda Sanz & Javier Moreno (CSIC, ES)

Introductory talks

MicrobiomeSupport Regulatory Task Force introduction - Yolanda Sanz (CSIC, Spain)
Integrating gut microbiome insights into food safety risk assessments - Javier Moreno (CSIC-UAM, Spain)
Scientific criteria for the characterisation of microorganisms of regulated products in the EU - Rosella Brozzi (EFSA, Italy)
Developing next-generation biosolutions for agriculture within the EU legislative framework - Sandrine Claus (STARFISH Bioscience, France)

Round Table Discussion

With Rosella Brozzi (EFSA, Italy), Sandrine Claus (STARFISH Bioscience, France), Céline Druart (Pharmabiotic Research Institute, France), Javier Moreno (CSIC-UAM, Spain) and David Yañez (CSIC, Spain)

PROJECT EXHIBITION

DATE & TIME: November 27, 2025 14:30 - 16:00

This parallel and interactive session will allow conference participants to dive deeper into diverse research projects exploring food system microbiomes.

Session 1: How food system microbiomes contribute to food transition pathways is an exclusive Round Table Discussion hosted by Microbiomes4Soy (https://microbiomes4soy.eu/), Tribiome (https://www.tribiome.eu/) and Wheatbiome (https://www.wheatbiome-project.eu/) featuring representatives from different stakeholder groups. Additionally, the projects will present tangible outputs and interactive exhibits that showcase their latest research and innovations.

Session 2: How to predict emerging food system risks is an interactive session hosted by the HOLiFOOD (Home - HOLiFOOD Project) and FoodSafeR (FOODSAFER – EVERYBODY'S BUSINESS) projects, which dives into AI-based tools for emerging risk prediction and interaction with potential end-users for their fine-tuning and validation. In addition, a short overview of both projects will be presented.

Session 3: Unlocking microbial potential – accelerating discovery through integrated infrastructure. This session, hosted by UNLOCK (UNLOCK - microbial research facilities), presents a cutting-edge research infrastructure that combines high-throughput experimental facilities for microbial community discovery with a FAIR-data platform for cloud-based analysis. The infrastructure offers subsidised access for academia, is open to commercial users and provides expertise and technical support to help researchers advance their work. Meet the UNLOCK team and get inspired by ongoing projects.
